Leon W. Schuyler

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death of retiree Leon W. Schuyler on July 16.  He was 87. 

Leon was born on May 30, 1924 in Herkimer, N.Y. He proudly served his country in the US Army in World War II, in the European Theater. He was a graduate of Clarkson University in New York.

Leon was an electrical engineer for IBM for over 30 years, retiring in 1978. After retiring from IBM, he began working at WHOI in 1979 as a research assistant working for Ken Prada.  He transferred to Ocean Engineering in 1982 and retired in 1985.

He was a past commander of the Foxboro American Legion and was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Shriners Lighting Unit. He was a member of the Cawnacome Sunshine Lodge and recently joined the Foxboro VFW as their oldest member. He was a member of the Aleppo Shrine in Wilmington, a former deacon at the Bethany Congregational Church in Foxboro, and was a former auxiliary policeman in Foxboro. He loved ice cream, enjoyed a good game of bridge, and was an avid New England sports fan.

He was the beloved husband of the late Jean (Kembel) Schuyler. Loving father of Linda D. Bettincourt and her husband James of Newton, N.H.; Gary R. Schuyler and his wife Donna of Mattapoisett, MA; and Sandra Young and her husband David of Mansfield, MA. He was the grandfather of Karen Bettincourt; Timothy Schuyler and his wife Noelle; Matthew Schuyler and his fiancé Ashley Maguire; and Amy Young. He was he brother of the late Robert Schuyler and dear companion of the late Merle Caton.

A funeral service was held on July 20, at Bethany Congregational Church, in Foxborough. Interment followed at the National Cemetery in Bourne with US Army Honors.  To light a special candle in Leon’s memory, please visit the funeral home web site at www.robertsandsonsfuneral.com.
