John Arthur Crobar

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree John Arthur Crobar on April 4, 2024.  He was 71.

John was born in Ogdensburg, New York, to James and Elizabeth Crobar. Growing up in an Air Force family, John spent time in Texas, Nevada, and Germany before settling in Falmouth when he was in the second grade. He graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1970.

John spent time in the Civil Air Patrol, Boy Scouts, and had an Enterprise paper route. John began his long career at WHOI in 1974 as a warehouse worker.  He was promoted several times throughout his career and retired as distribution supervisor in 2012. After his retirement from WHOI, John worked at EOM Offshore in Pocasset.

John volunteered as a scout master to the Boy Scout Troop 43. He also spent much time setting up the warehouse at the Falmouth Service Center. John had a lifelong passion for flying. He got his pilot’s license and flew many friends and family over the Cape and Islands.

John leaves his wife of 45 years, Jane Crobar of Falmouth and his son Matt Crobar of Clawson, MI. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Crobar and sister-in-law Kathy Crobar. John leaves behind his sisters-in-law Barbara VanSickle and Elizabeth Kelly; brothers-in-law Ted VanSickle and Chris Kelly; nieces and nephews Megan Keller, Brain Kelly, Doug VanSickle and Katie O’Brien; and grandniece Elsa Keller.
