James Creighton
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death
November 16, 2005 of retiree James E. Creighton at his home in East Falmouth
after a long illness. He was 88.
James Creighton was born April 20, 1917 in Warren, Maine, and graduated
from St. Mary’s High School in Waltham, MA in 1935. He spent a
year studying civil engineering at Northeastern University in 1936-1937
before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1939. While serving in the
Air Force he earned a certificate in mechanical drawing and a
bronze star, retiring in 1967 after a 28-year career as a Master
Sergeant in Communications Operations. Jim then worked briefly at Wood
Lumber Company in Falmouth as a hardware clerk from 1967 to 1969 before
accepting a position as a stock clerk at the Army and Air Force
Exchange at Otis Air Force Base.
He joined the Institution staff in May 1970 as a security guard and
transferred to the Stockroom in October 1972. Jim worked as a
mail clerk from June 1973 to March 1979, when he returned to the
Stockroom. He transferred to Purchasing in December 1981 and
remained a casual employee working in the Stockroom until he retired
from WHOI in February 1990.
Survivors include his wife, Kyoko (Nojiri) Creighton of East Falmouth,
MA; a daughter, Sandra Creighton of Jacksonville, FL; and two
grandsons.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, November 18, at 11 a.m.
at St. Anthony’s Church on Route 28 in East Falmouth. Burial will
follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
