Harry H. Stanton

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death
June 9, 2001, of retiree Dr. Harry Hughes Stanton of Provincetown, MA, at the Hospice House in Barnstable, MA.  He was
73.

“Doc” Stanton, also known to family and friends as Skip, was
born in Mystic, CT, and educated in Florida, where his family moved
when he was a child. He earned a medical degree in Florida. In 1950 he
enlisted in the U.S. Army, and upon his discharge tried a musical
career in Broadway. It did not work out, and he returned to a career in
medicine. He married and moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he
worked at the Virgin Islands Hospital. The Stantons decided to return
to New England and settled in Provincetown, where they operated the
Coat of Arms guesthouse for many years.

Doc joined the WHOI staff in 1974, working primarily aboard Research Vessel Atlantis II and a short time on the R/V Knorr, until his retirement in 1993.

Survivors
include his wife, Arpina (Eghigian) Stanton of Provincetown, MA; a
sister, Clauda Green of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001, at 3 p.m. at
the Universalist Church on Commercial Street in Provincetown. Burial is
in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to the Hospice House, 88 Railroad
Avenue, Barnstable, MA 02630.
