George R. Harvey
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the
death November 9, 2005 of George Ranson Harvey in Inverness, Florida. He was 67.
George Ranson Harvey was born December 30, 1937 in Boston and received a
B.S. degree in chemistry from Boston College in 1960 and a Ph.D,
from MIT in organic chemistry in 1964. Following
graduation he worked as a group leader in the Agricultural Research
Department of Monsanto Company in St. Louis from 1964 to 1969. He
headed the chemical metabolism program and conducted research on such
topics as the synthesis of herbicides, insecticides, hormones and
growth regulators. While at Monsanto he also lectured at nearby
Washington University in organic photochemistry.
He joined the Institution staff as an assistant scientist in
1969. He was promoted to associate scientist in 1972, and left
WHOI in 1977. Among his students was Vice President for Board Relations
Dan Stuermer, for whom he served as thesis research chairman.
His research interests included the biogeochemistry of natural and
synthetic halogenated organic compounds in the sea and the chemistry
of humic substances. He was author or co-author of more than 30
publications while at WHOI and held three patents relating to the
synthesis of useful agricultiral products for work done while he was at Monsanto.
A memorial service will be held December 10, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the
Charles Davis Funeral Home, 3075 South Florida Avenue (Route 41), in
Inverness, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
that donations in his memory be made to either the Habitat for Humanity of Citrus
County, 6636 West Norvell Bryant Highway, Crystal River, FL 34429 or
Citrus Memorial Hospital Foundation, 502 West Highland Boulevard,
Inverness, FL 34452.
