served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1944 and in the Office of
Strategic Services from 1944 to 1945. After the war he attended
Franklin

worked as a seaman on an ocean-going tug for a year and held other
jobs, but he found his calling with welding and metallurgy. He was

worked on a wide range of instruments, constructing components of the
giant piston coring system on R/V Knorr,
adjustable strobe mounts for the ANGUS camera system during the Cayman
Trough expedition, and numerous pieces of equipment for Geology and
Geophysics Department staff.  Colleagues noted Carl’s ability to
meet deadlines and to offer suggestions which contributed to the
effectiveness of at-sea operations.

A resident of Sandwich since 1959, Carl Young loved sharing stories and
discussing the Red Sox with friends at the Mills Restaurant in Marstons
Mills, where he was a regular.  He was a member of the Wyoming
