Zihua Liu, Postdoctoral Scholar, joins WHOI’s PO Department.  Zihua earned her PhD from the Department of Mathematics, University College, London.  Her research interests are linear and nonlinear waves, oceanic internal solitary waves and internal tides.  Zihua is working with Karl Helfrich on the theory and modeling of internal waves.  Currently, they are investigating the dynamics of transition from beam-like internal tides to shorter nonlinear waves with modal structure and the consequences for the properties of the internal coastal setting with different scales of motions and backgrounds.  Photo provided by Zihua Liu.
