Woods Hole, MA – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has been nominated for two Webby Awards for its work in sharing mostly never-before-seen footage of the wreckage of the RMS Titanic. “When Alvin Visited the Wreck of the Titanic” is nominated in the Video – Viral category  for a Webby Award, chosen by the Academy, and Webby People’s Voice Award, voted on by the public.

The Webby Awards are international awards honoring excellence on the Internet, and presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). They have been hailed as the “internet’s highest honor” by the New York Times and is considered “the Oscars of the internet.”

The two nominations are the first time WHOI has been tapped in distinct categories. It was previously nominated for its work with its Ocean Encounters virtual series. Nearly 13,000 entries from all 50 states and over 70 countries worldwide were received by the Academy this year.

The WHOI nominated footage was captured in July 1986 from cameras on the human-occupied submersible Alvin and the newly built, remotely operated Jason Junior, and included some footage never released to the public. The rare, uncut, and unnarrated footage of the wreck of Titanic marks the first time humans set eyes on the ill-fated ship since 1912 and includes many other iconic scenes.

From now until April 18th, votes can be cast at https://vote.webbyawards.com/PublicVoting#/2024/video/general-video/viral .

Winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
