MIT/WHOI Joint Program Students Attend the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland

by Anthony Meza and Hiroki Nagao

Graduate students and alumni from WHOI’s Physical Oceanography Department recently joined more than 5,000 attendees at the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland, for a week filled with science and discussions about the future of ocean research. The meeting featured poster and oral sessions on topics including tropical air-sea interactions, polar oceanography, ocean modeling, and carbon sequestration. There were also town halls and workshops dedicated to the ARGO program, sharing research and career planning in science. Beyond the science, students enjoyed coffee breaks, dinners, and other social events that helped connect them with experts from around the world. Overall, the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting offered students a valuable and memorable opportunity to learn, connect, and grow within the oceanography community.

Hiroki Nagao presents his research poster entitled “What Controls Interannual Variability in the Northeast Atlantic Deep Water (NEADW)?”

Ashley Lasinsky presents on “Biogeochemical Impacts of Tropical Cyclones in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific from BGC-Argo Floats” at 8:30am Monday morning, the first time slot of the conference! For those of us coming from the U.S., it still felt like 3:30am. Photo taken by Ashley’s advisor, Caroline Ummenhofer.
