OPEN NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR HUMAN LIVES AND LIVELIHOODS

We face a critical need for new and renewable sources of water, food, energy, and jobs.

With a rapidly changing climate and global population expected to exceed 10 billion this century, we face a critical need for new and renewable sources of water, food, energy, and jobs. Today, ocean science and technology are leading the way to ensure food and energy security, boost the blue economy, and sustainably meet humanity's growing needs.

IMPACT STORIES

Predicting rainfall and extreme weather events

Recent increases in the frequency and intensity of storms, droughts, and other extreme weather events represent a threat to human populations both near the coast and far inland. Because the temperature and salinity of ocean surface water is closely linked to weather on land, timely information on these key variables can significantly improve storm and rainfall forecasts and enable preemptive action to prevent harm.

Fueling the future with seaweed

Marine farming-if safely and smartly implemented-holds great promise to meet the world's growing food and energy needs. Fuels generated from biomass, known as biofuels, could provide a low-emission alternative to fossil fuels. However, growing biofuel crops such as corn and sugarcane takes land out of food production and requires inputs-freshwater, fertilizers, and pesticides.

Reducing harm from red tides and other toxic blooms

Microscopic, plant-like organisms known as phytoplankton form the base of many freshwater and marine food webs. Although they play a critical role in sustaining life, some single-celled algae can be toxic in large numbers. Under certain conditions, these species can rapidly reproduce, producing what are known as "harmful algal blooms" (HABs) or in some cases, "red tides." These toxic blooms are on the rise and have been reported in fresh water in every U.S. state and along the coasts.
