Stephen T. Wessling
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of former employee Stephen T. Wessling on July 3. He was 60. Stephen worked as a merchant seaman for 40 years, traveling the globe before retiring as a chief mate.
Son of Dr. Philip I. Wessling and Mary (Mulcahy) Wessling, Stephen grew up in Falmouth and graduated from Falmouth High School.
Stephen began his career at WHOI in 1975 as a messman aboard the R/V Knorr. In 1984, he transferred to the R/V Oceanus as an able bodied seaman. He left in 1987.
In addition to his wife Janet Burris-Wessling, he leaves his son, Christopher S. Wessling; two sisters, Kathleen Wessling and Pamela Wessling; and two brothers, Philip Wessling and James Wessling.
