Auguste K. Clough

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death
August 9, 2005 of retiree Auguste K. Clough of Wentworth, NH after a brief illness.  He was 93.

Born June 16, 1912 in Wentworth, NH, Auguste “Gus” Clough attended
Concord, NH, schools and was graduated from Concord High School in
1930. 
He held a number of jobs during his life, including working as a truck
driver for the U.S. Forest Service in the 1930s and as an assistant to
“The Great Lester” in the Traveling Magic Show which toured the East
Coast.

He moved to Falmouth in 1941 and worked briefly for his brother at
Clough and Higgins Trucking in Hyannis before joining
Eldridge and Bourne Moving & Storage in Hyannis. He worked for the
firm from 1940 to 1963, serving as a foreman many of those years.

He joined the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution staff in July 1963 as a utility man in
Buildings and Grounds, supervised by Harold Backus.  He was
promoted to Buildings Maintenance Supervisor in 1965, with
responsibilities for the supervision of custodial personnel, ordering
cleaning supplies, furniture and equipment placement, and grounds
maintenance.  He was promoted to Facilities and Maintenance
Supervisor in 1974, and retired from the Institution in June 1977.

After his retirement from WHOI, he and his wife Hazel spent time at
their home in West Falmouth, in Ocklawaha, Florida, and in New
Hampshire.

He is survived by a daughter, Gwen Erwin of Clayton, GA; two sons,
Auguste G. Clough and Dennis J. Clough, both of West Falmouth, MA; nine
grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-greatgranddaughters; two sisters, Yvonne Qunst of Chadds Ford, PA and
Virginia Keith of Wentworth, NH; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held August 11, 2005 in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
