Phytoplankton physiological ecology; coupled biogeochemical cycles; application of molecular approaches to study of ocean biogeochemistry; nutrient scavenging mechanisms in marine phytoplankton; development of cell-specific indicators of nutritional status for field use; nutritional controls on primary production; organic phosphorus cycling in marine environments; harmful algal blooms; proteomic and genomic studies of key phytoplankton functional groups such as diazotrophs and coccolithophores.
