Linda Lucier

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death February 29, 2000 of former employee Linda E. Lucier. Linda died at her brother’s home in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, after a long battle with cancer. She was 58.

Linda was born February 9, 1942 and graduated in 1960 from South Broward High School in Hollywood, Florida, with a major in business. She attended Charron-Williams Commercial College in Miami, earning a certificate in business in 1960. She worked briefly as a flight attendant for United Airlines, based at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, and as a communications operator/dispatcher for the Metropolitan-Dade County Police Department in Miami in 1965 and 1966. In 1967 she joined the Miami law firm of Spence, Payne, Masington & Grossman as secretary to a senior partner and remained with the firm until 1973, when she moved to Massachusetts. She worked for Tyco Laboratories as secretary to the general counsel from 1973 to 1976, and following a division merger with Mobil Oil joined Mobil Tyco Solar Energy Corporation as an executive secretary in 1976. In 1980 she joined the Boston law firm of Gaston Snow & Ely Bartlett as a legal secretary. She moved to Cape Cod and joined the staff of the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority, where she worked as an executive secretary from June 1987 until October 1988, when she joined the WHOI staff. While at WHOI she worked in Human Resources with Kathy LaBernz, in the Center for Marine Exploration with Bob Ballard, and in Administration with Larry Ladd and Paul Clemente until illness forced her to leave the Institution. She retired in 1999.

She is survived by her brother, James Lucier, and sister-in-law, Naureen, of Coon Rapids, MN; an aunt and uncle of Bridgewater, MA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services and burial took place March 3, 2000 in Minnesota.
