Anthony F. “Peane” Ferreira

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Anthony F. “Peane” Ferreira on March 14 at the Falmouth Care & Rehabilitation Center.  He was 87.

Peane was born May 27, 1924, in Falmouth.  He was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Pine) Ferreira. He was a Merchant Marine for twenty years serving in World War II. His ship the Helena was torpedoed on June 3, 1943, and sank.

A lover of the ocean, Peane began his 20-year career in WHOI’s mechanic shop in 1969 and worked as an assistant mechanic until he retired in 1989. He returned on a casual basis from 1995 to 1998.

Peane enjoyed all types of sport and was an avid golfer.

He was the beloved husband of the late Florence (Almeida) Ferreira. He is survived by his children, Scott and Brian Ferreira, both of Falmouth and his sisters Grace Catrambone of Teaticket and Wilhelmina Penn of Indiana. He is also survived by one grandson, Mark Ferreira, and many nephews and nieces.

Visiting hours will be on Sunday, March 18, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Falmouth. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 19, at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 E. Falmouth Highway, E. Falmouth. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
