The Comparative Analysis of Marine Ecosystem Organization (CAMEO) program is a partnership between the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service and National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences whose purpose is to strengthen the scientific basis for an ecosystem approach to the stewardship of our ocean and coastal living marine resources. CAMEO encourages the development of multiple approaches, such as ecosystem models and comparative analyses of managed and unmanaged areas (e.g., marine protected areas) that can ultimately form a basis for forecasting and decision support.  Collaborations between academic researchers and federal agency scientists are central to the program. Development of models that address key scientific questions by comparing ecosystems and ecosystem processes, models that are geographically and temporally portable, and that incorporate assessment of model skill, are of particular interest.

We invite applications to participate in a CAMEO Workshop on End-to-End Modeling of Marine Ecosystems.

The goals of the workshop are to produce:
  • A coherent description of the methods available for end-to-end modeling.
  • An analysis of the advantages and limitations of different model structures.
  • An assessment of model use as decision support tools for resource management.
  • Publication of workshop proceedings in a refereed journal.

Workshop Support
Support is available for forty participants from US academia and federal laboratories.  We solicit participation by active practitioners of End-to-End Modeling as well as data analysts and data managers. Participation by early career scientists, women and minorities is encouraged.

To apply, please complete the application form and submit it, along with a 1-page abstract, by December 15, 2009.  Applicants from US federal laboratories:  in addition, please notify Kerim Aydin of your application: Kerim.Aydin@noaa.gov.

Organizing Committee
John Steele, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Dian Gifford, University Rhode Island
Eileen Hofmann, Old Dominion University
Kerim Aydin, NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center

Funding
Funding for the Workshop is provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation.
