National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense..." With an annual budget of about $5.92 billion, we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.
Perkins School for the Blind
Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts, the nation?s first school for the visually impaired, provides education and services to help build productive, meaningful lives for children and adults who are blind, deafblind or visually impaired with or without other disabilities. Founded in 1829, Perkins pursues this mission on campus, in the community and around the world.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a private, independent organization in Falmouth, Mass., dedicated to marine research, engineering, and higher education. Established in 1930 on a recommendation from the National Academy of Sciences, its primary mission is to understand the oceans and their interaction with the Earth as a whole, and to communicate a basic understanding of the ocean's role in the changing global environment.
