Meet the Mooring Experts

Meet the Mooring Experts

July 31, 2012

WHOI research specialist Rick Trask tackles difficult challenges, like how to make measurements of a single spot in the ocean for long periods of time. He and his colleagues do it using moorings, like the parts of one he showed journalists participating in the 2008 Ocean Science Journalism Fellows. These long lines, secured by weights and floats, hold instruments that gather data for up to a year regardless of weather or other hazards, like ice. Today at 2:30 at the Science Made Public presentation, Trask will share how he and his colleagues design and build these platforms, then assemble them at sea, and—most importantly—bring them back with their hard-won data.
