Just Like Home
May 1, 2015The unusually cold winter allowed WHOI engineers to do something they normally can’t do: test equipment in polar conditions. Here, an autonomous Slocum glider operated by the Mixing Measurement and Modeling group is tested in Woods Hole Harbor in advance of its deployment in the Arctic later this year. Instruments on the glider will provide scientists back on shore with a near-real-time view of fine-scale mixing processes in the upper ocean that play an important role in the movement of carbon, nutrients, and other chemicals through the marine system.(Photo by Sean Whelan, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
