How to Hold a Penguin

Researchers sometimes have to handle wild animals as part of their work. When handling penguins, they use what’s known as a “rugby hold,” so-called because the penguin’s torpedo-shaped body looks something like a rugby ball tucked under the researcher’s arm. This penguin was examined as part of a 55-year-long study of Adelie penguins on Ross Island in Antarctica. (Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
