Duyck, E., Foukal, N., & Frajka-Williams, E. (2025). Circulation of Baffin Bay and Hudson Bay waters on the Labrador shelf and into the subpolar North Atlantic. Ocean Science21(1), 241–260. https://doi.org/10.5194/os-21-241-2025

Above is a new high-resolution, time-mean map of the surface velocities in the Northwest Atlantic. These velocities are derived from surface drifters drogued at 15 m depth. This new high-resolution perspective of the surface circulation in the region demonstrates the strong boundary current flow, including the coastal currents around Greenland and eastern Labrador. These currents move freshwater from Greenland and the Arctic cyclonically around the subpolar North Atlantic to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, where much of it mixes offshore into the North Atlantic Current. Importantly, these freshwater pathways avoid the interior Labrador Sea where deep convection occurs in winter.
