WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY (WHPL)
Join photographer and seaman Craig Dickson on Saturday, October 25, at 3 p.m. at the library as he shares images of the deep submersible vehicle ALVIN, which was originally on R/V Lulu up to 1983, then on the Atlantis II from 1984-96, and on the Atlantis from 1997 to present. His photos offer a unique glimpse into what it was like for scientists and seamen who worked with ALVIN every day for many years, documenting the workings of ALVIN while at sea and the changes made as its development progressed. Craig has shared his stunning photography at the library many times over the years, sharing the beauty to be found in far-flung locations on the sea, on land, and underwater. For this presentation, the photos he will share are entirely from his time at sea, showing the varied conditions over the years in many oceans. Craig served for 34 years on vessels of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and retired as second mate. The vessels he sailed aboard include the Lulu, the Atlantis II, the Knorr, and the Atlantis. In his earlier years, he sailed as a seaman, progressing on to sail as an officer on the Atlantis, Atlantis II, and the Knorr. His travels have taken him to Iceland, Bermuda, the Azores, and more.
