Developing Analytical Techniques for Platinum Group Elements in Hydrothermal Vent and Sediment Pore Fluids

The project aims at developing analytical techniques for platinum group elements in small fluid samples (pore waters, vent fluids) to investigate the mobility of these elements in deep-sea sediments and hydrothermal systems. We will investigate the mobility of platinum group elements experimentally under hydrothermal conditions using ultramafic rocks from the Earth's mantle as a starting material. Results from this project will elucidate the effects hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic rocks has on the platinum group element budget of seawater, and enable us to pursue future studies of platinum group element mobility in hydrothermal systems.
