I sailed on the Oceanus periodically in the 1980s and 1990s, and was chief scientist on two cruises to the Sargasso Sea in '96 and 97 – my first (and only) experience as a chief scientist.  I have always been grateful to the captain and crew for how helpful they were to me on those two cruises.  I was a bit anxious about being in charge, and they did all they could to put me at ease.  They were thoughtful, skilled, and generous with their time.  Memories of the scientific details from the cruises have long since faded, but the feeling of gratitude toward the Oceanus and her crew will stay with me always.
