Diversity Movie Night The next Diversity Movie Night will be held on Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 in Redfield Auditorium. The movie will be Europa, Europa (1990). We will have cider, wine, cheese and crackers afterwards. Flyers should be posted on the Bulletin Boards. An announcement will be put in the Calendar and Headlines. Election Details We will have seven continuing members and six new members will be elected. We will begin accepting nominations at the Open Meeting in October. We will have hard copy nomination forms at the meeting. Other nominations will be collected via an online form on our web page. A notice should be sent out the the Bulletin Board list and WHOI Headlines announcing our call for nominations. Working Groups Diversity Movie Night (Sheri White & Kerry Heywood) - the next movie night is noted above. WHOI Diversity Brochure (Annette Hynes & Ami Scheltema) - we hope to have a mock-up from Graphics to pass around soon Website (David Gaylord) - we want to add more pictures, perhaps from 2008 Diversity Day. Election (Marie Lardie) - Mary will collect nominations for the upcoming election. Other Issues We would like to add information (contacts, programs, etc.) on diversity outreach opportunites for researchers looking for ways to fullfil NSF's Criterion II. We will begin collecting information. If you are involved in a diversity related program or have a contact at a minority-serving institution, please contact Sheri and pass on that information. As noted by Susan Avery, we need to think about "Diversity Programs" that we can seek funding for through NSF, capital campaigns or other sources. There are currently open calls for proposals for enhancing diversity in the geosciences (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12726&org=GEO&from=home), and broadening participation in STEM (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=13646&org=GEO). Future Meeting Dates The October meeting in the Village will be the Diversity Committee's annual Open Meeting. October 28th 1:30-2:30 pm - Smith Conf. Room (Village) OPEN MEETING November 18th 1:30-2:30 pm - TBD (Quissett) December 16th 1:30-2:30 pm - TBD (Village) WHOI-wide Harvest Ball The Harvest Ball will be held on October 18th from 7 to mid-night in the tent on Fenno lawn. The cost is $25 per person. Roland will be catering diner and there will be live music. They are hoping for at least 150 people.
