Anne Cohen said she has been interested in marine calcification for as
long as she can remember. Growing up in coastal South Africa, she spent
much time collecting mollusc shells, which were the subject of her
Ph.D. thesis at the University of Cape Town. She came to Woods Hole
Oceaongraphic Insitution for postdoctoral research, where she became
interested in corals and coral reefs. Studies of coral skeletal growth
have become more sophisticated, and Cohen now uses nanoscale
technologies to study how corals make crystals and to analyze their
crystal composition. She has scuba dived on reefs around the world and
loves to travel with her husband and young daughter.
