R/V Atlantis Shipboard Computing: UNIX, Mac & PC Resources

UNIX Resources

Linus, a Pentium III 800 PC running Linux (Red Hat 6.2 Distribution) is the primary server for the Atlantis. Crew, Alvin Group and Science Team members are given accounts for both email use and general Unix work. Disk space is sufficient for most cruises. All Unix hosts on the network share their larger disk partitions via nfs. A consistently named directory structure is used as “mount points” for these file systems. Each system has a main nfs subdirectory /files. Below this is one directory for each machine that can share a filesystem. The filesystem from a given computer is mounted onto a directory name that matches the computer name.

The directory tree looks like:

    /files/linus
    /files/ftp
    /files/lucy
    /files/schroeder
    /files/snoopy
    /files/woodstock

This technique allows the absolute pathname to a given data file to always be the same regardless of what computer the program is running on.

If you plan to generate a large amount of data, please bring your own machine with adequate disk space for your needs.

Linus has the following software currently installed for general use:

    gcc (v2.7.0): a full featured C/C++ compiler
    gmt (v2.1.4): Generic Mapping Tools package for data manipulation
    matlab (v4.2c): a numeric computation package
    perl (v5.001): the practical extraction and reporting language
    pine (v3.91): a menu driven mail package

Two Linux systems (lucy and schroeder) running Redhat 6.2, used primarily for Seabeam data processing, are frequently available for science use. Each machine has 128MB of RAM, a 10GB internal IDE disk and a 17GB internal SCSI disk. They each have a CD-R/W drive and 8mm Exabyte 8505 tape drive. Venus is another Linux computer located in the Computer Lab running Redhat 6.2 for general science use.

Lucy and Schroeder have the following software installed for science use:

    gcc (v2.7.0): a full featured C/C++ compiler gnu tools: various tools and utilities, such as emacs
    gmt (v2.1.4): generic mapping tools package for data manipulation
    matlab (v4.2c): a numeric computation package
    perl (v5.001): the practical extraction and reporting language
    MB-System (v4.6.10): multibeam data analysis and plotting tools

Mac Resources

There are six Mac computers available for general science use. Two (iron and nickle) are located in the Main Lab; the other four are in the Computer Lab. Their specs are as follows:

Two Asante Micro EN/SC SCSI ethernet adapters are available to connect Mac PowerBook computers to the shipboard network. As discussed above, computers must have TCP/IP software already installed in order to work on the Atlantis network. If network connectivity is a requirement, you are encouraged to bring your own network adapters that have been tested on a TCP/IP network.

PC Resources

There are seven PCs available for general science use. Three of these computers are in the Computer Lab, two are in the Main Lab and the other two are usually set up in the Hydro and Bioanalytical labs, but often are moved to accommodate science needs. The PCs are running Win2k or WinNT. The PCs in the computer lab all have sufficient RAM, Zip250, floppy and CD-ROM drives. All use linus as a print server. If you are going to be saving data to Zip, floppy or CD-ROM, please bring your own media.
