I believe it is important to particpate in outreach and education initiatives. I've taught at the Children's School of Science in Woods Hole and Falmouth Academy's Summer Program. I continually participate in online outreach initiatives such as engineergirl.org and Engineer Your Life which are databases where aspiring engineers can go to read and talk to real engineers in a wide variety of fields.
