Stoelting bone cement #51458

Assistance provided by Ann Bodio, student technician.

bottles shells on netting

Shown are live scallops in air on the benchtop, attached to plastic netting with Stoelting bone cement #51458. Also shown are bottles of the two components of the bone cement, a powdered component and a solvent.

8.57 grams of powder and 5.49 grams of solvent were mixed together to form a viscous pink paste. Live scallop shells were brushed with a plastic brush to remove algal fouling. They were blotted dry and a blob of the pink adhesive was placed on the netting which was on a piece of waxed paper. The live scallop was pressed into the adhesive and left for 15 minutes to dry in air. The scallops plus the netting were then immersed in flowing seawater. Two of the animals immediately lifted off the adhesive. Within an hour, another animal had come loose. The remaining 3 animals (out of 6) stayed attached to the netting.
