Sample preparation task 11 by Enid Sichel on Aug. 5, 2002

Assistance provided by Ann Bodio and Carol.

Ann and Carol preparing adhesive bonds for life tests.
Rick and Michael configuring the floating cage for life tests.

Scallops were scrubbed clean of algal fouling, patted dry with a paper towel, and then the shell surface was sprayed dry with compressed air. A daub of adhesive was placed on the dry shell surface and the plastic netting was placed on top of the scallop and embedded in the adhesive. Ann and Carol held the scallops and the netting in place until the adhesive set up. The scallops were clapping, which complicated the process. The water temp. was 25oC. The relative humidity was almost 100 percent!

  • 24 animals were attached with PSI-326 (Smart Glue) and immersed in seawater after about 15 minutes.
  • 24 amimals were attached with 3M Fastcure 08107 and immersed in seawater after about 15 minutes.
  • 36 animals were attached with Ceramicrete, and almost all bonds failed at once when the animals were immersed. We attribute the failure to the high humidity.
