Sparring with JASIN

Between July and September of 1978 more than 50 teams of scientists from nine countries, including physical oceanographers from WHOI, participated in JASIN, the Joint Air-Sea Interaction Experiment. The experiment focused on the physical processes that drive mixing in ocean waters. Here, a 10-meter (30-foot) spar buoy goes through testing prior to deployment during JASIN. The  free-drifting buoys carried current meters and other instruments and were deployed a total of eight times in the western North Atlantic during the experiment.
