WHOI Biologist Tim Shank and lab members gather around live images of deep corals in Indonesia during the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2010 INDEX-SATAL expedition. Shank, lead scientist for the cruise, studies the distribution and molecular genetics of deep-sea invertebrates. On the cruise, Shank was one of several experts in a range of subjects who examined high-resolution, high-definition images to provide expertise remotely and from around the world. From left are Scripps Institution of Oceanography graduate student Elizabeth Sibert, Shank, high school volunteer Will Hallisey, MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student Santiago Herrera, and WHOI Summer Student Fellow Catriona Munro.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
