Flaring off in the Gulf

The recovery vessel Q4000 burns off gas after receiving oil from a “choke line” plumbed into the blowout preventer of the Deepwater Horizon in June 2010, some two months after the well exploded and began spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The photo was taken from the R/V Endeavor during a cruise organized by WHOI researchers Chris Reddy, Rich Camilli, and Ben Van Mooy and funded under the National Science Foundation’s Rapid Response program. Stories from many of the WHOI researchers who continue to work in the Gulf can be viewed on a new multimedia site: Science in a Time of Crisis.(Photo by Chris Reddy, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
