Description: This training workshop provides an overview of the human dimensions of coastal and marine protected area management, offers examples of visitor use and associated impacts to natural resources and visitor experiences, and demonstrates applications to help coastal and land-use managers address the interrelated management of visitors and natural resources. National and local speakers will address several topics related to visitor use planning, recreational impacts to wildlife, and regional visitor use monitoring. Participants will work in interactive groups and as a whole on several activities and case study exercises designed to learn and then apply different strategies and tactics to better manage visitors to their respective sites.

Audience: Limited to 35-40. Coastal and land use managers, natural resource planners.

The Coastal Society's 19th Bi-Annual International Conference
Measure for Measure: How Do We Gauge Coastal Stewardship
Hyatt Regency Hotel, Newport, RI

The conference will focus on how coastal managers, resource users, law and policy makers, educators and students, and other coastal community members measure and assess coastal resources, functions and human impacts. Two plenary sessions, one discussing the management of shifting baselines, and the other analyzing the US Commission and Pew Ocean Commission reports will headline the conference. Several concurrent sessions, focusing on the selection, collection, analysis and use of relevant information to inform and support coastal resource management, will encompass four primary themes: Coastal Governance, Coastal Land Use, Water Quality, and Habitat & Ecosystem-Based Management. Several field trips, tours, social functions and student-centered events are also inlcuded. GreenScapes: Beautiful Landscapes That Protect Our Water

GreenScapes are beautiful landscapes that protect our water. Come learn how to have a beautiful landscape without using excess water and chemicals -- it's better for you, your wallet, and our environment. Guest speakers Samantha Woods (Executive Director of NSRWA) and Wendy Garpow (NSWRA and Mass Bays Program) will describe the evolution of the GreenScapes program, a new outreach program for homeowners on the South Shore developed in conjunction with the water departments of seven towns in the region. They will also explain the concepts and principles of the program, which is summarized in a series of nine fact sheets dedicated to watering, mowing, fertilizing, herbicides/pesticides, plant choices, and design.
