Science on the Pier

September 2, 2017

Senior engineering assistant Diana Wickman (right) talks with visitors to the WHOI pier at the recent Woods Hole Science Stroll. On the table in front of her is a yellow Slocum glider, one of the autonomous underwater vehicles she pilots for the National Science Foundation-funded Ocean Observatories Initiative. Wickman and WHOI’s other ocean glider pilots can monitor and reroute vehicles gathering data thousands of miles away, using computers in the Coleman and Susan Burke Operations Room at WHOI, or any secure laptop equipped with Glider Terminal software and an internet connection.
