Pre-flight Check

August 9, 2014

Physical oceanographer Amy Bower reviewed preparations on R/V Knorr recently before an 80-day in the sub-polar North Atlantic to research ocean currents in the region. Bower is interested in Earth’s overturning circulation, a complex web of currents traveling the globe. “Understanding the details of this overturning circulation and measuring changes in its strength are high priorities in the international climate and ocean science communities,” she said. Bower and colleagues are tracking and measuring the flow fluctuations, temperature changes, and freshwater contributions to these currents using moorings and floats, which they are deploying this summer. Bower wrote about the work on her WHOI blog, OceanInsight.(Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
