R/V Knorr departed the WHOI dock in June for Reykjavik, Iceland, with a full load of moorings, buoys, and instruments, some of which are visible on the ship’s upper decks. From Reykjavik, the ship will make several cruises as part of OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) and OOI (Ocean Observatories Initiative). Since it was launched in 1968, Knorr has traveled over one million miles in the service of ocean science. Sometime next year, it will be retired from the U.S. oceanographic fleet to make way for its replacement, R/V Neil Armstrong. (Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
