Our Skilled Trades personnel work with researchers to find innovative ways to measure and record information about the oceans. In addition to building dozens of moorings and buoys, the shops have worked on the remotely operated vehicles Jason and Jason II, as well the British deep-sea research vehicle Isis. Currently, the shops are involved with the development of vehicles replacing the robot ABE (for Autonomous Benthic Explorer) and the submersible Alvin.

The current shop rate is $58 per hour.

Carpenter Shop
The Carpenter Shop staff specialize in construction and renovation of the Institution's physical plant.

Electrical Shop
The Electrical Shop staff design and install complex control systems for shipboard equipment and scientific instrumentation.

Mechanical Services
The Mechanical Shop consists of three groups; the Instrument Group, the Mechanical Group and the Welding Group.
