A Proud Moment

The R/V Neil Armstrong reached another milestone when it was christened in a ceremony Saturday, March 29 at the Dakota Creek Industries shipyard in Anacortes, Washington. In this photo, Carol Armstrong, wife of late astronaut Neil Armstrong, breaks a bottle of champagne against the ship's hull while her granddaughter, Kali Armstrong, shipyard president, Dick Nelson, and Rear Admiral Matthew Klunder cheer. The ship is expected to arrive in Woods Hole in mid-2015. (U.S. Navy photo by John F. Williams/Released)

Moving an Island

WHOI Research Assistant Richard Sullivan holds one of 50 aeolian (wind-driven) sediment traps deployed on Santa Rosa Island in Florida to study the process by which a barrier island is overtopped and "drowned" by wind and wave action. The project is being run by Rob Evans, Jeff Donnelly, and Andrew Ashton of the WHOI Coastal Systems Group and is funded by the Department of Defense to understand the effect of sea level rise on barrier islands around the country.
