Green Communities Lecture Series: Smarter Land Use and The Project Integration Procedure
South Shore Natural Science Center
Karl Kehde of the Smarter Land Use Project is an experienced developer, environmentalist, and former planning board member. He will lead a presentation/discussion and explain a process to improve proposed development projects and their surrounding neighborhoods. Working independently with grant funding over the past twelve years, Kehde has developed the "Project Integration Procedure" as way to involve all stakeholders -- neighbors, developers, planning officials, and environmentalists -- in a process that achieves "smart growth”. By evaluating the neighborhood surrounding the proposed project and using hands-on, project modeling techniques, the Project Integration Procedure identifies and places community-enhancing features in a proposed development. Tested in over 500 collaborative meetings in 48 developments in 5 states, the process shows residents how to work their way out of difficult situations with developers and boards to enhance proposed projects in ways that improve property values, reduce traffic congestion, enhance natural and historic resources, and build community spirit.
