Reading Rocks

January 28, 2019

A member of the science team on a recent expedition aboard the research vessel Atlantis carefully documented the freshly cut surface of a piece of seafloor basalt. The rock formed during a volcanic eruption on the seafloor and likely contains chemical signatures of the invisible processes that helped shape the seamounts near where it was found.
