Crew members aboard WHOI’s original research vessel Atlantis, which supported oceanographic research from 1931 to 1964, work together to hoist the ship’s anchor. In those days, the task was time consuming and required a great deal of muscle power. The current crew of the R/V Atlantis rely on a hydraulic motor to raise the anchor, which weighs 2.5 tons, about the same as a minivan. (Photo by Scott Bray, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
