Golden Opportunity
October 17, 2014Onlookers on shore and at sea enjoyed a clear view of the Golden Gate Bridge during a recent R/V Atlantis transit. WHOI ships often make port calls in major cities, affording both scientists and crew a chance to sightsee in between cruises and loading equipment. Scientists on this trip had just completed a nearly three-week cruise mapping the Mendocino Ridge, a westward-running fracture zone on the edge of the continental shelf. The NOAA-funded cruise was one of several aimed at better understanding the geological processes that occur along the ridge, including seismic activity and volcanoes.
