Frequent and Careful Work

Every few years since its launch, WHOI’s deep-diving human-occupied submersible Alvin undergoes a complete and thorough overhaul. In this archival image taken during a mid-1970s overhaul, engineer William “Skip” Marquet  is seen through a viewport cutout in the hull. In 2010 Alvin returned to WHOI for a major redesign and upgrade to improve and enhance its capacities—a complex project involving a dedicated team.
