Chile Waters
December 30, 2017It takes a village of scientists, engineers, and ship’s crew to conduct a research expedition like this off the coast of Chile in February 2017. The expedition’s chief scientist, Jeff McGuire (back row left, in green T-shirt) and students and faculty from the Universidad de Chile and the Universidad de Concepcion (Chile) gather with crew from the research vessel Atlantis and the remotely operated vehicle Jason. They used Jason to install seafloor geodetic equipment to monitor strain along the Northern Chile subduction zone, where historical records indicate a magnitude 8 earthquake and tsunami can be expected.
