Two Ships

May 7, 2018

Members of the WHOI community lined the dock on a rainy, cold morning recently to watch as the institution’s two large research vessels, Neil Armstrong (left) and Atlantis (top) returned to Woods Hole together. Neil Armstrong had just completed the third of three cruises to service moorings that are part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative Pioneer Array south of Martha’s Vineyard. Atlantis, which hadn’t been home since October 2017, was finishing an expedition to study the link between phytoplankton blooms in the North Atlantic, cloud formation, and climate.
