Star of Antarctica

December 24, 2018

A WHOI scientific team follows a ridge above the Koettlitz Glacier en route to conducting research in Antarctica in December 2007. The sun is due north over the Ross Sea, meaning it’s midday in Antarctica. WHOI geochemist Mark Kurz leads the group to a location where they will sample rocks to study how they weather in extreme cold conditions. Former MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student Andrea Burke has her rock hammer out. Journalist Hugh Powell is writing in his notebook. WHOI geologist Adam Soule has just taken a photograph of the patterned ground beneath their feet. (Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
