Gliding Underwater

October 29, 2012

An autonomous underwater glider, is recovered to the R/V Knorr. The glider, preprogrammed with navigation waypoints before deployment, maneuvers through the ocean without an external propulsion system, traversing the upper ocean by adjusting its buoyancy and trim. This particular glider recently returned from collecting data on ocean salinity, temperature, and currents near a moored Doppler current profiler as part of a engineering test sponsored by WHOI’s Access to the Sea program.(Photo by John Lund, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
