In November 2013, after many years overseeing Alvin activities as program manager at the National Science Foundation, Brian Midson (right) finally had his first dive in the sub. Afterward, Midson, who was aboard R/V Atlantis during Alvin certification dives off San Diego, received the traditional initiation for first-time divers—being doused in seawater—from WHOI engineer Jeff McDonald. Midson joins a growing list of approximately 2,200 peole who have traveled inside the historic sub, and is among the first to have done so in Alvin‘s newly upgraded personnel sphere.
