All Hands on Deck

All Hands on Deck

December 1, 2017

The hands of Raytheon engineer Brad Guerrero and WHOI engineers Jennifer Batryn and James Kuo (left to right) prepare a motorized profiler for deployment on the Global Irminger Sea Array in the Atlantic Ocean near Greenland. Moorings and ocean gliders in the array make a wide range of measurements from near the surface down to nearly 3,000 meters (almost two miles) below. The profiler travels up and down a mooring line from about 140 to 2,500 meters (460 feet to 1.5 miles), making one round trip every 20 hours to measure salinity, temperature, oxygen, turbidity, and other water characteristics. The array is part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative. (Photo by Rebecca Travis, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
